I pray for peace for his family, and I hope the Joe bashing stops.

Joe Paterno, the man who for decades was synonymous with the powerhouse Penn State football program, is reportedly in declining health. Onward State, the student-run Penn State website, reported on Saturday that Paterno had been taken off his respirator that morning, according to a source close to the family. Further, a report by Tom McAndrew of Blue White Illustrated indicates that Paterno's extended family has been summoned to the hospital.
If those reports are true, Paterno likely has, at best, a matter of days to live. It may be even shorter than that, as Mike Sisak of the Citizens' Voice in Wilkes-Barre is reporting that Paterno is "near death."
"Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications," said Paterno family spokesman Dan McGinn. "His doctors have now characterized his status as serious. His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."
It was only a week ago that Paterno gave his first interview since his November firing at the height of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. In it, interviewer Sally Jenkins noted that Paterno was wheelchair-bound, wearing a wig, and reduced to whispers due to his battle with lung cancer. Further, Paterno is 85, and most people that age aren't able to begin and win a fight with a disease like lung cancer. Still, Jenkins also noted that Paterno remained sharp, and his familiar tone and personality are evident in the interview snippets that were posted online.
CBSSports.com will provide more details as they become available, as this is a developing situation.
You sure about this?
I can't confirm this anywhere as of 9:34.
You sure about this?
Both of his sons, via twitter said he was still alive.
you probably want to be sure of your facts before you post something like this...right or wrong, a lot of people will be upset at this.
One source is not the way to go. Just my friendly advice.

Go easy on him, I just searched the words "Joe Paterno dies at 85", and got 11 hits on the first page from all kinds of sources including UPI.
It doesn't look like he will survive much longer though.
It's true. All of the major news networks are reporting it.

Yeah, CBS Sports reported it as true and now the Paterno family is refuting it as are other networks.
It's true. All of the major news networks are reporting it.
Well, I don't know what "major news networks" you read, but as of 10:19 EST, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, and FOX are all reporting he is still alive. What is your source? Wikipedia? [:D]

I saw it on multiple news outlets including CBS sports. If I am in error, I apologize.
I went to see a friend who was a day from death as it turns out, and his kids, some family, brothers, friends were all standing around on their phone, texting talking, twitter facebook. Made me sick. I lost respect for the bunch of them. pisses me off to think about it

You're not the reporter, and you sure as hell are not responsible for fact checking a story before you post it to GB. Hell, 78.7% of everything posted on GB is BS, not your fault if some reporter posts a bogus story and you fall for it.

Funny but I consider CBS a "major news network".

Penn State student website Onward State has reported that Penn State players were notified of longtime head coach Joe Paterno's passing via email, and CBSSports.com went on this report. Paterno, 85, had been receiving chemotherapy as part of his treatment for lung cancer.
However, Paterno family spokesperson Dan McGinn told a New York Times reporter that the report of Paterno's demise is "absolutely not true," and Jay Paterno tweeted that his father "continues to fight." Onward State has since retracted their report.
If you can't feel the music; it's only pink noise!
You report to your supervisor not around him.
He correctly discharged his obligation.
It's a shame he ended a 61 year career and his life in disgrace.
Reports of Joe Paterno's death Saturday night inaccurate from multiple media outlets, including CBSSports.com and Onward State
Websites and Twitter accounts jump the gun on latest Paterno news
BY GEORGE HENN / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Sunday, January 22 2012, 12:50 AM
On a day when Joe Paterno's failing health made news, several websites jumped offsides Saturday night in publishing false reports that the 85-year-old Penn State legend had died.
The erroneous news spread within minutes after Onward State, which bills itself as "an online news organization serving the Penn State and State College community," wrote on its Twitter feed at 8:45 p.m. that Paterno had died.
At 8:47 p.m., CBSSports.com published a brief story saying Paterno was dead, linking to Onward State's tweet. Before 9 p.m., HuffingtonPost.com also posted a report of Paterno's death, without citing a source.
Elsewhere around the Internet, websites such as NJ.com (The Newark Star-Ledger's website), TheBigLead.com and BleacherReport.com published stories citing the CBS report.
Meanwhile, Wikipedia, as usual, pounced quickly upon word of a celebrity's demise, listing Paterno's date of death as "January 21, 2012" before deleting that line from its page at 9:16 p.m.

GOOD ONE, SPIDER!!! So now CBS sports has become "all of the major networks"?? This is why misinformation is passed. CBS picks up a story from the STUDENT news and doesn't even bother to verify it first.
The perpetrator, three Penn State officials are being prosecuted, the University president was let go with a mulit-million dollar pension and should have been prosecuted along with the rest of the Board of Trustees who voted to scapegoat Joe.
The truth will come out.
call me crazy, but if my dad was joepa and media was saying he had passed, I wouldn't know it or care about it. I would be focused on nothing but my dad. Give a damn what the tv or people not by his side say. And I can assure you, if my dad is ever in this situation, there will not anyone on a phone or twitter/facebook while in his room.
I went to see a friend who was a day from death as it turns out, and his kids, some family, brothers, friends were all standing around on their phone, texting talking, twitter facebook. Made me sick. I lost respect for the bunch of them. pisses me off to think about it
Not to hijack the thread, but you may be somewhat presumptive in your condemnation of communication methods. I certainly don't know your particular situation, but when my wife was in a coma a few years back and the outcome was uncertain/unknown - in the few days it took to gather folks from literally all over the country, texting was the very best means of communicating with numerous family at the same time who were desperate for news - and all at once. Making 25 phone calls and taking many more each day while everything else was going on was simply not possible....
RIP.
A pox on the all Penn State Trustees houses for the scandal cover up and making Joe the scapegoat for their sins.
