May have to put my dog down. (decision)

Headed into the Vet, as soon as they open at 9am.

About a day and a half ago, my dog (Buddy) a Male Basset hound rescue I've had for 4-5 years now, started having issues.

Was not eating. Very strange for him, because he is all about the food. Seemed to be having some issues moving his back legs.

Left for work yesterday morning, & he kinda slowly came out if his dog house, and again had little to no interest in food. Highly unusual.

Came home from work yesterday evening, and he did not come running out to greet me as usual.
Highly unusual.

Seemed to be having a lot of problems with his back legs and moving.

I mixed up some his favorites to eat, as most of his AM food was left in his bowl.

Got him to eat a good meal. Visibly having issues moving.

About 1 AM, I heard him crying outside. Went outside, he had dragged himself off the porch and was sitting in the flurries. I went out, he started thumping his tail. It became obvious at that point he could not move his hind legs at all, and could not get back up the two steps to the porch and his dog house and heated pad etc.

I picked him up, and carried him up and into his house, his tail thumping lightly the whole time. He seemed glad to be back in his heated house, and settled down.

Went back into house. About 30 minutes later, I heard him drag himself out again. I went out, picked him up, tail thumping lightly, and brought him inside.

I've had him on my lap every since then just holding him.
Heartbreaking. I called out today. Been waiting for the one Vet in this area to open at 9 am. He is more of a farm Vet, rather than a pet Vet. Only choice.

It does not look good. Heading in, in about 15-20 minutes.

Say a prayer for Buddy, if you are so inclined. Thanks.

That is a common ending I am afraid....my Emme lost the use of her back legs in November and I had to put her to sleep on Nov 30. It is a tough thing to have to do for the critters that we love, but it is the kind thing. I am sad for you. [:(]

Just got back from the Vet.

Exactly what you would expect from an 80+ yr old farm Vet. Very brusque seemed uncaring. Probably seen it all. I had read numerous reviews and expected this going in.

Bottom line, a lumbar disc problem. Two shots to the spine. One an anti-inflamatory the other an antibiotic.

Said keep him confined for next 4-5 days. He will either regain use, or not. Bring him back in if you want me to put him to sleep.
    Does not recommend the surgery.

Left the Vets office with him, as soon as we headed back toward the car, the tail started thumping again. [:)]

Got him home, set him down on the ground to maybe do his business. He just dragged himself a few feet then flopped over. [:(]

Got him back up, headed to house. Set him down to open the front door. (This is his corner of the front porch with his roofed enclosure and his XL heated pad igloo dog house.)

Tail started thumping again, and instead of wanting to come in, he started dragging himself towards his house. I helped him in. Broke my heart.

Will keep checking on him every 15 min or so. Bring him back in to sit on my lap shortly. Hoping he will have a bowel movement.

I'm off today, Sat. and Sun. I'll have him sitting on my lap most all the time. He's my Bud.

Thanks for the well wishes. I hear him crying again outside. I'm gonna go scoop him up.

Again, Thank you so much guys.

I'd get a second opinion. His life is worth that.

I agree about getting a second opinion. I lost a dog many years ago after taking him to an elderly large-animal vet I had used for years. The vet gave him an antibiotic shot or two, and at the time I thought that was all I could do. In hindsight, I wish I had sought further help. Best wishes to you and your pup.

I agree. Gonna give it a couple days of love, and see what happens.

The only other Vet here, (the one I wanted to go to) is only open Wed. & Thurs. Office in another town other days.

Will do what I have to do, including making the hard choice if necessary.

He's sitting on me again, with his face as close as he can get his to mine, like usual.

My Ex-wifes Dachshund has that rig. She calls it "the most expensive dog in history." What with the operations and all.

I do appreciate everyones kindness. Gonna be a long couple days.

I am very well aware of the proneness of these two breeds. We had Dachshunds as far back as I can remember going up.

Being up since 1am with my dog. I was googling symptoms and it immediately referenced the two breeds and their weakness in this area due to the long backs.

    Thank you though.

Gut wrenching. You are in my prayers Ken.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Thank you all. I appreciate it.

I have not cried so much, since my Dad passed away about 3 years ago.

Telling Buddy he is a good dog, and watching him thump his tail, is breaking me up.

At least his tail is moving that "is a good sign."

At least he is on my lap and comfortable. Spending quality time, giving him love.

I was able to hold my Dad's hand as he passed. It gives me great comfort to have been there.

    This will as well.

My dog (Buddy) has not passed urine or had a bowel movement since at least 1 am, if not longer.

If his systems have shut down, he's done.

    Not looking good.

He has had a few sips of water. Has no interest in any type of food whatsoever.

Just wants to be as close to me as possible, and keep in constant contact with me.

This has been an extremely difficult day, since about 1am this morning. I'm worn out. I believe Buddy is as well, although he's been snoozing most of the day.

    I'm a wreck.

When they stop eating it is a sign that they are ready to pass on.

I know, but he does not seen to be in pain. Just paralyzed. He still slowly thumps his tail.

He has been in constant contact with me since 1am.

He will be sleeping with me on the couch tonight. Where we have been since 1 am.
