I have a sks that I would like to use for hunting but need to know how to make it "legal". It has a fixed 10 round mag. How can I make it a 5rd mag?

i assume you live in a socialist state.
Put a wooden block UNDER the mag spring.

Thanks for the advice. No I don't live in a communist state, we just can't hunt with mags that hold more than 5rds.

Wouldn't it be better to just buy a 5 round mag?

Yeah if you can get a 5 rd mage that feeds well, which in itself can be a trick. Most of the detachable ones are terrible.

The 7.62x39mm rounds is about as powerful as the old 30-30 Winchester out to about 100-150 yards. I would use the heaviest soft point you can buy.

That is ridiculous, there absolutely is no good reason for limiting the law-abiding citizens magazine capacity for hunting or anything else.
You will have to locate a fixed five round SKS magazine and switch them out, I would recommend the fixed over the detachable as they are very unpredictable and you don't want that, you should also find out if a block placed in the magazine limiting its capacity to 5 rounds would be acceptable as that should be a lot easier.

Second the fixed magazine idea. The detachable ones are way to hit-or-miss.

I put one together several years ago with a synthetic sporting stock and a fixed 5 round mag. I removed the bayonet mount. It has made a very handy sporting rifle.

Like cpermd says, put a wooden block under your magazine follower that limits the capacity to 5 rounds. Essentially it is doing the same thing as putting a plug in a shotgun to limit it to 2 rounds in the magazine.

    Best.

The suggestion by permd and tsr1965 would be OK in Louisiana, according to my neighbor, a La Fish & Wildlife Enforcment Officer. The 'catch ' is the same as for a plug in a shotgun....it has to be something you can't just slip in quickly when you see you are about to be checked.

Check the wording of the regulations, and keep a copy. Does it say "factory Magazine with a capacity of xx".
