I have a sks that I would like to use for hunting but need to know how to make it "legal". It has a fixed 10 round mag. How can I make it a 5rd mag?

Put a wooden block UNDER the mag spring.

i assume you live in a socialist state.

Thanks for the advice. No I don't live in a communist state, we just can't hunt with mags that hold more than 5rds.

Wouldn't it be better to just buy a 5 round mag?
The 7.62x39mm rounds is about as powerful as the old 30-30 Winchester out to about 100-150 yards. I would use the heaviest soft point you can buy.
You will have to locate a fixed five round SKS magazine and switch them out, I would recommend the fixed over the detachable as they are very unpredictable and you don't want that, you should also find out if a block placed in the magazine limiting its capacity to 5 rounds would be acceptable as that should be a lot easier.
Second the fixed magazine idea. The detachable ones are way to hit-or-miss.
Ditto!
Best.
Check the wording of the regulations, and keep a copy. Does it say "factory Magazine with a capacity of xx".
