Panic food buying

medic07medic07 Member Posts: 5,222 ✭✭✭
As we have all seen, the public has gone into mass panic mode and pretty much cleaned out the grocery stores of foods.
I am set with enough food for a month, but have added to my shelves to keep me in better condition as this goes on.
However, I am getting non-perishable foods.  Yet I see people loading up with all the fresh meat and milk they can get.

So since mine is 95% non-perishable, I am utilizing takeout from local places to preserve my supplies in the event it gets really bad and the eating places are not getting restocked.  Plus it helps keep them afloat as best as possible.

I see other people burning through their food supplies they just bought and are back in the store looking for more to take home.  People need to plan better.

LOL...the majority of society are sheep.  They don't plan, they don't want to think about it, they want it done for them.  You can't teach most of these people in the midst of a crisis.  It's natural selection.

Take out could be just as bad I guess, I agree with using fresh now and conserving the longer term stuff for later, of course if all of us just "add a few to our shelves" I think that equates to panic buying just in smaller portions :)
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Walking is good, wife and I walked 3.5m today and plan to continue, keeping yourself healthy and using your lungs will help prepare you for potential illness.
We waved to neighbors, wife asked many of the older folks if they were doing OK, she dropped off a bunch of supplies and groceries to a young single Mom out of work that she had as a Girl Scout. Lots of people out doing yard work, cleaning Etc. Families with young kids riding bikes, Etc. I could get used to this part.

All the crazy stuff that is going on in the store. Really just get the staples an go about real life cooking at home like grand ma did. stop the steak an high end food stuff. Walk down the frozen food section. no pizza no ice cream, no tv dinners. how long you going to last on that stuff. Dont get me wrong I like my ice cream. But that section looks like the paper section. Wife made stuffed hot peppers an sweet peppers with deer meet an mash potatoes today. Didnt buy anything But some extra butter . Still have 150 pounds of potatoes left from fall. Peppers were frozen from fall. Nothing hard to cook either.

Shopped at an urban Walmart a few days ago.   Noticed the following:

    - Most of the frozen bags of chicken cuts,  fresh red meats, eggs (68 cents/doz grade A Large),  beans, peas, rice, and pastas, soups, cereals, ice cream and other frozen foods, laundry and cleaning supplies, dry and evaporated milk were gone or in shorter supply.
    - Still a good selection of fresh produce, milk, candy, crackers, available.

Methinks there was some panic buying going (well duh!).   Still the buyers seemed to be a bit cautious by buying what could be frozen or stored long term, what may be their favorite foods (ice cream and cereals) to keep the kids happy or quiet.

I hope to go back the next few weeks to shop and see if the buying patterns continue.  Perhaps the wallets will empty, the freezers and shelves will be filled, or the panic will be over.

What I buy will depend on what I run out of, plus a little extra, and what I want to add to my SHTF supply.   I recently was able to buy a few bars of Fels Naptha to balance out the supplies for making laundry soap.

    Interesting times.

You could live on pizza pretty much forever. It has bread, meat, cheese, tomato paste and if you get the supreme pizzas they have green peppers, onions, mushrooms, black & green olives, etc. That's more than enough to keep you alive for a long time.

I went into town Sunday our  Ohio governor declared 11:59 Sunday night every one to say home until April 6th  only if you have to be out or work ( my oldest son works at plastipack  they make a big portion  of plastic bottles for the USA and Canada so no bottles no detergent and so on ,  so they have a deemed have to work and get a pass to carry with them in case there pulled over
any way back to my trip to fill up some gas cans pick up some odd and end food items if they had them LOL  bread, potatoes snacks , chicken for the dogs and along with there favorite dog snacks  ( they eat better than I do ) stopped at several places
fully went by wally world they had two employees passing out TP very small packs of 4 rolls to each person must have been a special run just for them  (  so I took a sharpie added one day supply for mom  on the label would be funny if not close to the truth )   I was looking tonight I would almost bet we more food stockpiled then my mom and dad bought in a years time when I was kid
seems people are confused still no clear idea of what the heck is going on just in a buy what ever you can and hope for the best .
bright side  wife is happy she has a "to do list "on the house and yard were and going at it but she also looking forward to the break from work giving her body a well deserved rest , if nothing else

Wife and I are good to go on food stores.  Once we're through the perishable stuff we've got well over a year of stored emergency provisions.  I am waiting for them to send fuel prices skyrocketing.  They will find a way to do it, too much profit and tax revenue is being lost.

How can take out food be totally safe?
A worker could show no sign of the virus but could be infectious?
We sympathize with the restaurants but the fast food outlets are all open and they aren't staffed with the upper echelon of society.
And where they live in close contact is where the virus is expanding.
Oh and the news showed a liquor store in West Depford with the idiots standing on top of each other waiting in line.
Then there's these wonderful neighbors the politicians are afraid to call out and ARREST
