    Here we go again...

  • Ditch-RunnerDitch-Runner Member Posts: 25,390 ✭✭✭✭

being any LEO now sadly is stuck between a rock and a hard place .

as a kid I recall the old saying better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6 that holds so much truth any more

no way i could be a LEO and just keep yelling / begging dozen of times put down the gun , drop the knife get on the ground , get out of the car , stop fighting /resisting . and knowing any force I have to use will bring the justice system down on me no matter what the bag guy / gay did or was doing , especially if there a minority .

I know I would be going home that day . and the other guy(s) not so much

A example when Frank H. and the rest of the group that day back in 1934? did in Bonnie and Clyde , now days he would be in jail there family would be getting millions of dollars for not allowing them the chance to ( give up ) basic shoot first

but he went home that day

There goes another $27M Ditch-Runner. The officer is a 20+ year vet - not a rookie! Now the city manager has been let go for saying that all city employees are eligible for due process. WTH

This guy had a warrant issued on him and turned his apprehension into lethal encounter. I agree he is at fault for not following lawful orders.

I am not surprised so many people want to hand law enforcement, without question, absolute dictating control anytime there is an encounter. I find that troubling. Much like those that want to ban all guns because one was used to unjustly inflict damage. Never let a crisis go to waste is not a one sided philosophy. Many people complain when that philosophy is used for a reason they do not like and jump on the band wagon when it is used for one they do like.

We have to have check and balances for our system to work.

Yep, protesting is one thing, looting is another.

I couldn't agree more. When the riots occurred in Columbia , SC the Black Lives Matter folks burnt a couple of Police Cars. Columbia Police chief isn't strong, but Sheriff Lott.. ( National Sheriff of the Year ) is there. They threw a brick and hit a county officer and put him in the hospital. Lott stepped up and shot a few with the rubber bullets and they went home. News folks stuck a mic in Lotts face and said.. you shot them ... Lott responded " yes I did " and no problems since.

Stupidity is a sad thing BUT looks like another cop murder to me. Resisting arrest used to be just an added charge, now it's an instant death sentence without due process, on the spot.

    Seriously, how is this ok?

It is not OK, and she will be charged with something on the order of negligent homicide/manslaughter.

She basically admitted to as much when she said Taser, and then something to the effect of holy ***, I shot him.

That said, she should never have been put in that situation.

One stupid decision and one stupid mistake results in one life ended and one destroyed.

So lets go loot to show our moral outrage.

Back in 2002 in my hometown of Madera, CA a female officer thought she was reaching for her taser which was on her strong side with her Glock. The perp was handcuffed in the car but was kicking and they thought he would break a window. She killed him and of course the family sued. The female officer didn’t get fired either. Fast forward to now and it won’t matter. This officer is done. She will be lucky to just get fired. She wasn’t some rookie and she was a FTO. They’re gonna say she should have known better than some rookie. And of course the BLM crowd will use it as an excuse to burn down the city.

Two wrongs don't make any of this right. Dude wouldn't have been shot if he hadn't resisted arrest. Woman wouldn't have shot him if she hadn't confused her weapons.

It's a rare situation indeed where an officer should be shooting a perp. And resisting arrest ain't it.

Clearly they were out of the car. Then broke free to enter the car. Felony Evasion. Deadly force.. too bad.

They are going to ring her up tomorrow. She will spend tens of thousands defending felony charges. Her life is in shambles. She will be lucky to stay out of jail.

She should never have been hired in the first place, obviously, in a crisis she panicked. She might have made a great 911 dispatcher, or, maybe a prison guard at the women's prison. Clearly unfit to be a police officer.

I'll make no judgement since I don't know the facts but If I was the cop standing on the passenger side of that vehicle I would be highly pissed, he could've been shot very easily, luckily he wasn't.

There is a you-tube video of a cop chick in Lawrence KS a few years ago that did about exactly the same thing (only they were outside of the car). They made a traffic stop, and guy was belligerent from the word go. After some time they wouldn't produce dl. So they get him out of the car to arrest him. After quite a struggle cop chick shoots him and immediately says 'I thought it was my tazer'.

Those folks don't get paid enough, and get no respect. God bless them for trying to make the world a better place!!!!

To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go out into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness, how cheap, how cowardly, how pathetic. Ted Nugent.

I think between this and the Chauvin trial, no matter the outcome, cities gonna burn again this summer. And be be met with an even weaker response under the Harris/Biden administration. Sad. God help us.....

Have seen a lot of videos of LEOs trying to cuff a perp who asks why he is being arrested and they refuse to tell him. Perp keeps getting more and more agitated at the LEO until things go completely south. Seems like the reason for the arrest should be the first thing the LEO tells the perp. What is the reason for this common behavior?

No one said it was OK. She did not intentionally murder the idiot that was resisting arrest. In a very high stress moment she mistakenly grabbed her handgun when she meant to go for her Taser. It was a very tragic accident that could have been avoided had Mr. Wright (there's a boatload of irony in that name!) made better life choices. I think you might want to quit watching the main stream media.

My wife carries her sidearm on her strong side and her Taser on her weak side. She has had to deploy both at various times and in 30+ years has never confused the two. Thankfully, she's never had to discharge the sidearm, but has taken down numerous bad guys with the Taser.

ETA... FYI, I'm one of those that gave you a disagree.

Maybe they should get rid of the tasers and just use the big bottle of bear pepper spray and hose them down. You know.. put a big button on the front next to the camera they have to use....to spray. Big wide burst to maybe connect with everyone in the vehicle

  • allen griggsallen griggs Member Posts: 35,697 ✭✭✭✭

They have rung her up on manslaughter charges. Facing ten years in prison. She has been on the force 27 years and is in the union, in fact a leader in the police union.

I bet she was looking at a nice fat union pension three years down the road. I know a guy who retired from the fire dept. in Georgia, after 30 years, a union job, and retired at 30 years at full pay!

So I bet Officer Potter was planning to put in three more years, and then retire at $85K a year, for life.

Now that bubble has burst. Whether this disqualifies her from the pension I don't know but she is looking to shell out a hundred Grand in legal fees and maybe more. I think she will do jail time because it looks to me that she is guilty of manslaughter.

A cop uses the Glock instead of the Taser, and a man is dead. What should be her punishment, stay after work tomorrow and write on the blackboard 100 times, "I AM SORRY FOR USING THE GLOCK."

Has any media outlet told you the warrant for his arrest was for Armed Robbery?

He held a gun to a women's head while trying to rob her of cash.

Now that you know what the perp had previously done, what would you reasonably think he was diving back into the vehicle to get?

A stick of gum? A piece of paper and pencil to to pen his college application?

Does this knowledge change your view or perspective on what happened?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

Gee whiz, TAFKAD, what happened in the past has no bearing on the now.

He was not robbing anyone on the day he was shot.

What happened in the past not only had a great deal to do with how he reacted, but also had a great deal to do with how the police reacted.

Absent a warrant, it would have been a normal traffic stop for expired registration (depending upon who you believe), and he would not have been placed under arrest.

Absent a warrant, he probably would not have tried to flee.

Absent a warrant the police would not have known about him being charge with a violent robbery and the potential for him having a firearm, meaning.

Given there was an outstanding warrant and that he had carried a firearm in the past, the police were justifiably concerned when he jumped back into the car. He placed them in an untenable situation and died for his foolishness.

This is not to excuse the officer for mistaking a Glock for a Taser. In her defense, however, both are plastic, clunky, and fairly lightweight.

Crap, there goes that green font thing again.

Freedom and a submissive populace cannot co-exist.

It is a bad situation, she had only a couple seconds, to decide. Under pressure she used her gun instead of a Taser, big mistake no one is perfect. If he would of stood there he would still be alive, no one knew what he had in his car. If he would of turned around and started shooting there were a few police eating lead.

As far as the protesting while I don't get it but once you start damaging things it is not a protest it is a riot. In 1968 MLK was shot, and they started riots all over. I was just back from training, in the National Guard we were sent to Chicago. It was a mess if the store front window had Soul Brother written on it there was no damage. The next one broken glass looted, and quite often burned. Mayor Daley put up with it for a while then gave them a specified amount of time to quit. They continued to loot, and burn. Mayor Daley told them to stop or we will shoot. They shot a few, and that ended the riots. Wish some of these other Mayors had a set like him, instead of letting the mobs control.
