although this particular car was under warranty until 100k it shows what replacement costs could be. Just well buy another car instead of repairing. Giving new meaning to throw away cars...

    $1200 LABOR!!!! for battery replacement, no thanks, don't know how they could ask for that much after charging almost $27,000 for the battery itself........ bet we start seeing a lot of stolen/wrecked electric cars when the batteries go bad

    Just to show that it is not universally true, my Toyota dealer told me that they have never had to replace one of the current generation batteries in their hybrids. They don't even carry them as parts and so he had no idea what they might cost.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

    My oldest son who you would think would be the last person that would ever consider a electric car can't help but marvel at the speeds of The Tesla Model S Plaid the fastest Tesla in production. The EV can go from 0 to 60 in 1.9 seconds. The top speed is 200 mph. With a change of tires they tested one that ran a 8.90 quarter mile time. That's unheard of. A 4 door family car full of groceries and kids running near NHRA pro stock times.

    He called his wife from the dealership the other day. His wife, Corina told him if he buys one he might as well throw his cowboy hat away and she's not going to speak to him ever again. She married a bull rider and motorcycle racer who became wealthy in the commercial real estate business but she says she still loves that cowboy she fell in love with at the rodeo a long time ago that was driving a Chevy dually that night.

    Do keep in mind that hybrids and full EVs are very different vehicles. A hybrid's battery is much smaller because it gets most of its drive power from a gasoline engine. The battery and electric motor only supply supplemental power when it's needed.

    The battery in our Highlander Hybrid fits under the rear seat.

    I helped a buddy of mine replace a hybrid battery in a chevy suburban. It was a PITA, we had to gut the rear of the car to get at it so I can see the $1200 in labor. You also have to be real careful with the old and new battery, it's not an easy job.

    I wouldn't have an EV but I would consider a hybrid not that I am likely to.

    The places I frequent in the backwoods of Idaho, don't have charging stations. My diesel has a 600 mile range with a transfer tank, hauling the ATV and travel trailer. I do however have a 4500 watt generator for the travel trailer in case some fool is silly to enough venture there in a EV.

    The repair bill caused an uproar in the Reddit comment thread because the Volt’s battery, although hard to find at this point, would cost much less if bought from other places. For example, I found a couple of sources that range between $5,500 and $10,000. It’s a DIY sort of thing, so you’d still need to pay for labor, coolant, and whatnot, but it’s still almost three to five times cheaper this way.

    If that is a legitimate invoice then that Chevy dealer truly ripped off their customer

    EV stuff is not cost efficient . Just wait till they raise electricity costs... Kalifornia has banned gas engines being sold 2035. So any hybrid stuff will be gone too.

    Illinois land of the beloved JB Prickster has raised rates through EPA regulations and other such "EPA BS" about 40% . They can shovel all the EV dung up to the stars on the new launch.

    I have no interest in buying any hybrid or EV vehicle. Not even an electric bike. I figure on my lifetime we might need one or two more gas vehicles pending the mileage we drive. Even considered buying another one now and just storing it away. Could care less if gas goes to 10 bucks a gallon. 15000 mile at 40 mpg is 375 gallon or 3750 Yr. No big deal.

    I'm an old fart from the era of "if men were meant to fly they'd be born with wings" generation. But I gotta say any company with the guys with the brains to be able to build a family 4 door sedan grocery getter like the Tesla Model S Plaid  that has 0 to 60 times in under 2 seconds is way out there. That's unreal That's coming out of the hole faster than NHRA superstock and not far off of the Pro Stock times. Superstock is running at the low 10s in the quarter mile and the Tesla Model S Plaid  with groceries and kids in the back is running the quarter under 9 seconds. If you've never been to a drag strip let me tell ya that is scary times. All wheel drive and little sister driving while eating her ice cream cone just blew away a superstock dodge driving with one hand while reaching over and wiping the babies face. It's unreal to me.

    All the expensive European sports cars would have a hard time seeing the taillights of the Model S Plaid at the end of the quarter mile and the Plaid is about $300,000 cheaper than the exotic European sports cars.

    For people that still want the sound of a hot car they have speakers to make it sound like a formula 1 or an old hotrod or any of the popular race car sounds.

    I'm afraid people that buy these EV vehicles are in for a rude awakening:

    There is no current way to dispose of , recycle, or get rid of these batteries.

    Most likely they will be sitting around for the next 100 years out in the Nevada desert.

    Them are some expensive electronic gallons!!!!
