although this particular car was under warranty until 100k it shows what replacement costs could be. Just well buy another car instead of repairing. Giving new meaning to throw away cars...

$1200 LABOR!!!! for battery replacement, no thanks, don't know how they could ask for that much after charging almost $27,000 for the battery itself........ bet we start seeing a lot of stolen/wrecked electric cars when the batteries go bad

Just to show that it is not universally true, my Toyota dealer told me that they have never had to replace one of the current generation batteries in their hybrids. They don't even carry them as parts and so he had no idea what they might cost.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

The 100 dollar question.. wonder if he doesn't know what they cost.. IF they can even get them to replace.

My oldest son who you would think would be the last person that would ever consider a electric car can't help but marvel at the speeds of The Tesla Model S Plaid the fastest Tesla in production. The EV can go from 0 to 60 in 1.9 seconds. The top speed is 200 mph. With a change of tires they tested one that ran a 8.90 quarter mile time. That's unheard of. A 4 door family car full of groceries and kids running near NHRA pro stock times.

He called his wife from the dealership the other day. His wife, Corina told him if he buys one he might as well throw his cowboy hat away and she's not going to speak to him ever again. She married a bull rider and motorcycle racer who became wealthy in the commercial real estate business but she says she still loves that cowboy she fell in love with at the rodeo a long time ago that was driving a Chevy dually that night.

Do keep in mind that hybrids and full EVs are very different vehicles. A hybrid's battery is much smaller because it gets most of its drive power from a gasoline engine. The battery and electric motor only supply supplemental power when it's needed.

The battery in our Highlander Hybrid fits under the rear seat.

I helped a buddy of mine replace a hybrid battery in a chevy suburban. It was a PITA, we had to gut the rear of the car to get at it so I can see the $1200 in labor. You also have to be real careful with the old and new battery, it's not an easy job.

I wouldn't have an EV but I would consider a hybrid not that I am likely to.

The places I frequent in the backwoods of Idaho, don't have charging stations. My diesel has a 600 mile range with a transfer tank, hauling the ATV and travel trailer. I do however have a 4500 watt generator for the travel trailer in case some fool is silly to enough venture there in a EV.

Ok 30 k for the battery BUT $40 SHOP supplies, outrageous!😐️

EV stuff is not cost efficient . Just wait till they raise electricity costs... Kalifornia has banned gas engines being sold 2035. So any hybrid stuff will be gone too.

  • GrasshopperGrasshopper Member Posts: 16,981 ✭✭✭✭

Illinois land of the beloved JB Prickster has raised rates through EPA regulations and other such "EPA BS" about 40% . They can shovel all the EV dung up to the stars on the new launch.

Are you gonna get an E-Ray when they come out next year, Select?

  • select-fireselect-fire Member Posts: 69,448 ✭✭✭✭

I have no interest in buying any hybrid or EV vehicle. Not even an electric bike. I figure on my lifetime we might need one or two more gas vehicles pending the mileage we drive. Even considered buying another one now and just storing it away. Could care less if gas goes to 10 bucks a gallon. 15000 mile at 40 mpg is 375 gallon or 3750 Yr. No big deal.

Chevy Volt Battery Replacement Cost In 2022 : Detailed Analysis

While shopping for electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt, you might be wondering how long the battery would serve you before you need a replacement.

Besides, potential buyers would like to know the battery replacement cost. When you remain informed on all these particulars would help you stay financially prepared.

When it comes to electric cars, you must be knowing that the batteries degrade due to a phenomenon that experts term ‘calendar aging’. It is similar to the aging of humans and indicates a timeframe of aging over time.

The exposure of your car batteries and their use largely determine its performance. Currently, many automobile manufacturers, including Chevrolet, are coming up with hybrid vehicles that can operate on both electricity and gas. Besides, you will come across some pure electric cars on the market. Here, we are going to discuss the battery replacement cost of the Chevy Volt.

What’s the Chevy Volt battery replacement cost

Chevy Volt owners would need around $19200 on average to replace the batteries of these electric cars. However, the price largely depends on the quality of the battery.

It ranges between an extensive bracket of $3400 and $35000. It would cost you much more to get a new battery than a repurposed battery for this car.

Over time, you would expect your EV battery to deteriorate. In general, owners need to replace the Chevy Bolt battery after reaching the 100K mile mark. In case your car goes the distance, you might need this replacement a little later.

General Motors have come up with a warranty for the initial 100K miles or 8 years on the battery. This implies that the owners can rest assured of the battery life for this period. In case any issue arises with the engine within the warranty confines, the manufacturer would fix the issue.

However, be prepared to shell out the replacement cost of your Chevy Volt battery if the warranty period has expired in case you go for a used battery or one of the repurposed ones, the cost would be on the lower end. However, these batteries are not easily available, so you need to prepare yourself for the higher-priced ones.

Over time, it’s normal for your car batteries to lose their ability to hold the charge as well as vitality. Evidently, you need to factor in the replacement cost when you budget your purchase.

How long do the Chevy Volt batteries last?

On average, Chevy Volt batteries last for at least eight years. This equates to almost the initial 100K miles of the car. By this time, the battery would lose around 30% of its ability to retain the charge. With careful driving and the recommended maintenance, the battery would last a little more.

Factors that can impact the Volt battery replacement cost

The replacement cost of your Chevy Volt battery depends on several factors. We have highlighted some of these aspects for your convenience.

    1. Battery size and capacity

The car aftermarket is pretty diverse in the US. Besides, every automobile component comes in different categories. Evidently, the size of the battery and its capacity goes a long way in determining its price.

Of course, replacing the battery of a luxury car would be different from that of a sedan or hatchback. These cars are different in terms of seating configurations and sizes.

Accordingly, their engines require different amounts of power. With bigger engines, the cars would be more powerful.

Therefore, this would have an impact on the battery size and the corresponding replacement cost. In this regard, the cost of replacing the battery of your Chevy Volt would be moderate.

    2. Different battery standards

When you consider the international standards of battery, you can determine the cost of replacing one in your Chevrolet Volt. For instance, you can choose between the JIS (Japanese International Standard) and the DIN (European Standard).

Now, car batteries that adhere to the European Standard tend to be more expensive than their Japanese counterparts. Even if both these batteries fit your car and area of the same capacities, you need to shell out a higher amount for the batteries with European specifications.

Also, if you shop around for repurposed car batteries from Chevy Volt cars that are damaged following an accident, you might get one at a low cost.

    3. in car battery

The technology in the battery of your Chevy Volt car largely determines its replacement cost. You will come across different batteries for cars. These include lithium-ion batteries, gel batteries, and lead-acid batteries that come with valve regulation.

Now, depending on the charging system in your car, you need to decide the corresponding type of battery that you would need.

    4. Specifications and warranty

At times, when you shop for the battery of your Chevy Volt, you might come across similar batteries with different price tags. This might be due to the overall coverage and length of the warranty.

Car batteries that come with a longer warranty are likely to cost you more. With these batteries, you can enjoy a longer life in your car.

Besides, some batteries come with specific features that enable the owners to keep an eye on the levels of electrolytes. You need not tough the battery’s vent plugs to know this. Besides, the price might depend on the type of vent plug that the battery uses.

So, there’s no particular thumb rule to determine the batteries that would cost you higher. You simply need to consider the specifications and aspects that make the battery suitable for your car.

It would be wise to seek expert support in case you are not sure about the type of battery you should go for. The good thing in this regard is, you have tons of options to make your decision.

    Conclusion

The electric car, Chevrolet Volt, is a standard car that comes with a lifeline of 200K miles. On average, you need to get the battery of this car replaced every 100K miles.

So, during the entire service life of the car, you need to replace the battery at least once. As for the cost, the highest cost might be $35,000.

However, as we mentioned earlier, the average cost of getting the battery replaced would be around $19200. Now that you are aware of the expected lifeline and replacement cost of your Chevy Volt battery, you can plan your purchase and budget accordingly.

My brother paid $65 grand for his Tesla and he loves his car. It is a great car.

But, if it costs $32 grand to replace the battery, that makes the owning a Tesla a joke.

When they called I tried to talk to them about my car's extended warranty but they hung up on me!

I'm an old fart from the era of "if men were meant to fly they'd be born with wings" generation. But I gotta say any company with the guys with the brains to be able to build a family 4 door sedan grocery getter like the Tesla Model S Plaid  that has 0 to 60 times in under 2 seconds is way out there. That's unreal That's coming out of the hole faster than NHRA superstock and not far off of the Pro Stock times. Superstock is running at the low 10s in the quarter mile and the Tesla Model S Plaid  with groceries and kids in the back is running the quarter under 9 seconds. If you've never been to a drag strip let me tell ya that is scary times. All wheel drive and little sister driving while eating her ice cream cone just blew away a superstock dodge driving with one hand while reaching over and wiping the babies face. It's unreal to me.

All the expensive European sports cars would have a hard time seeing the taillights of the Model S Plaid at the end of the quarter mile and the Plaid is about $300,000 cheaper than the exotic European sports cars.

For people that still want the sound of a hot car they have speakers to make it sound like a formula 1 or an old hotrod or any of the popular race car sounds.

I'm afraid people that buy these EV vehicles are in for a rude awakening:

There is no current way to dispose of , recycle, or get rid of these batteries.

Most likely they will be sitting around for the next 100 years out in the Nevada desert.

    Good luck with that.

    Well.........

35 grand buys about how many gallons of gas?????........(about 11660 at 3 bucks per)

    11660 gallons at 22 mpg...........256520 miles!!!!!!

Them are some expensive electronic gallons!!!!

My $0.02 ........not so expensive........or, at times, worth much. 😉

They'll eventually improve the batteries and prices will come down. I just read today they are concentrating on recycling the batteries more now. It's coming no matter how much us old geezers don't like it.

The bad part about all the EV talk, everything is going to be made over seas, some things will be assembled here maybe at first. The only real fact I can say about an EV is I’ll never buy one, their just not my style. Maybe if they build one that would resemble say a old 66 or 67 Chevelle and sound, perform and feel like it had a built up 427 in it, maybe, but until then no.

select-fire, I checked with my brother today. He owns a Tesla which he bought 2 years ago. Great car he is quite fond of it, drives it every day.

I asked what a battery would cost, he said that, today a new battery would be $28,500. I guess your invoice is not fake, after all.

  • 62vld204262vld2042 Member Posts: 1,198 ✭✭✭✭

    Not at all.

I was only singling out a batteries versus gallons comparison. Besides, everyone's mileage may vary.

Heck.......according to the "greenies", charging electrons are free. Perhaps they use "The Force ".

Sadly........for them, and many others.......the coming year will prove otherwise. Especially for our friends in Europe.
