Suggestions on this year's hunting contest

Here is two things that I'd like to see what everyone else thinks for this years hunting contest. (I assume that we're doing it again!)
1. A deer has to be posted on here within 7 days of harvest.
2. Bonus points if you have a game cam pic. (must be no doubt it's the animal you killed. This could work with bucks or does if there is some way to tell it's the same doe.)
Yup, I'm already thinking about the contest this year. Heck, since I've brought it up, do we want to post the measurements on a buck for the score or just keep it on the honor system? Doesn't hurt to plan ahead!
Oh, I'd be darn tempted to drop from the contest if I get paired with Buckey, Bang or anyone else that shoots a mathews. I want to be on a winning team![:p] That should get things stirred up a bit![:o)] Happy Fourth to ALL![:D]

An idea? How about team Hoyt Vs Mathews Vs Bowtech Vs... Just take the AVERAGE score. Makes it more fair for everyone.
Another idea is assign points to other animals taken with a bow. Lots of people hunt turkey, pigs, elk, what ever. I even take a few pheasants every year with a bow. Can we get some credit for those too?
I think everyone here is honest enough to just post a score. Unless something does not look right, then they can be asked for the measurements.
That reminded me I had to change my signature line... [:D]
I have a suggestion, the way my lucks been count me out.[:(]
Whats up with you what happend to practice paticence and persistance. are you telling us you let luck control your sucess. common now Mag chin up your better than that.
I like DCSO's idea. However, I have to ask, will squirrels, rabbits and coyotes count? I usually shoot a few of them from the deer stand if things are slow and I want some gumbo meat (in the case of the rabbits and squirrels) and I will never let a coyote walk out of bow range.
Why not? Give each game animal a value for score. Squirrel = 5 points, Rabbit = 10 points, Pheasant = 15 points, Coyote = 25...
Sounds good to me anyway.
Oh and go team Hoyt...
Nice uh......uh.....squirt bottle
Yea nice squirt bottles[:p][:p][:D]

Stammered like a real team Hoyt wanna be![:D]

"FIST" First off, I'm not in to that![xx(] Unless you are, I'll assume that was a typo[:p][:o)][:D]
As for the contest, I'm sure more details will be posted to follow but we throw our names into a hat and draw teams. It's on the honor system based on the score of your buck killed with a bow and then points for a doe taken with a bow. If anyone can find me to put an arrow in me, it's like a 1000 point bonus but it's reduced to -50 if I'm on duty but I'd be shooting back![;)]
Oh, since we have a lot of new faces on here, for those that don't know, I'm a cop. Man, my state will let anyone have a gun![:0]
Also, how do you guys handle those of us who live in the south and have a "liberal" limit when it comes to deer? I am able to take 2 bucks and 10 does per year. I usually shoot 5-8 deer per year (enought to stock the freezer for a year). If you give points for every deer killed, those of us in the south can "stack the deck".
in regards to the # of deer allowed in the south vs the north does that mean they have to be taged....with my tags? Just because granny stopped hunting at 75(god i miss opening day with her) doesn't mean she doen't have tags to be filled. or how about old Gramps tags, at 80 he can still pull the trigger but not drawing many bows these days. with his lifetime licence including bow tags it would be a waste not to use them
1. Adding other animals to the deer contest would give an unfair advantage to those that don't have other animals to hunt or those that don't hunt others.
2. posting 7 days after a harvest could hinder your chances of a better score. ie, if you shoot a buck and enter it then shoot a bigger one 1 month later well your outta luck. Remember it is a 1 buck 1 doe or 2 doe if you don't get a buck. (I think thats how it was anyway).
3. I don't have a problem with the teams and setting them up different, I like the idea of more people per team however we do it.
These are just my thoughts.
Does anyones season start in Aug.?
Does anyones season start in Aug.?
I know the season in South Carolina lowcountry opens August 15th. At least it did when I lived there a few years back, and I don't think it has changed. They like the idea of being one of the only places that you can take a buck in velvet, legally.
souther tier 10/13
i have a couple small properties to hunt in the northern tier but i primarily hunt the southern tier where i have a few 1000 or more acres to hunt
ok so it is just the first buck that is reported, possible change could be to allow the reporting of a larger one to replace the first one reported, just my 2 cents
norther tier starts 9/27

Let me go see if I can dig up the rules from last season. That will give you a better idea of how we did things
Here ya go, These were the rules for last season. I got them from a guy on another site that runs a contest there as well.
All deer will be scored using this website link by gross Pope and Young scoring total. http://www.luckybuck.org/index8824.html
1. It doesn't matter how many states you hunt...one buck and one doe or one doe and a second doe* (for people who don't shoot a buck) will count for your score, no matter where taken. The first one entered will be counted...even if you kill the world record the following week.
2. NO PIC OR VID, NO SCORE. All pics should be tasteful (don't worry too much about tongues hanging out, but no pics of a skinned deer hanging over a pool of blood) You must post a pic or post a video link of your harvest to count as scored!
3. All does, button bucks and bucks scoring under 50 pts. count as 50 points.
4. Crossbows are allowed in states where legal.
5. Final deer entry date will be Feb 28th 2007 - 11:59 pm. All deer must be entered by then.
6. Elk, moose and bear WILL count as doe score (BUT ONLY 20 points, instead of 50) for participants who aren't allowed to harvest a doe in thier state.
7. Bow kills only...no gun, as it is an Archery contest...see crossbow rule above.
8. Mule deer will have a 20 point reduction in score.
9. You can wait to enter your buck, but not recommended.
10. Your bow must be somewhere in the picture.
11.You MUST have fun!
A photo is a must and your mug must be in the pix..[;)]
sounds like fun no matter what the rules are. now i hope i just get more time to hunt than last year
yea me too I diddent hunt as hard as I would have liked too/// its all about the last rule YOU MUST HAVE FUN[;)]

Are you suggesting that you would post an animal in the contest that someone else took? I'm just wanting to make sure that I'm not misunderstanding your post. This is an "honor system" contest to have fun so of course it should be a legal animal killed by you with your tag on it.
My suggestion to this would be the deer that is entered has to have your tag on it. In the case of people who live in states where you don't have to tag your deer, like GA or SC, we will have to use the honor system that the deer was killed under your license. In GA we have to mark our license with the date of the kill. I will post a picture of my license with my deer if required.
Lastly - How about we make it 14 days to post a pic instead of 7. Also, the pic must be date stamped.
I realize that I am talking out of turn here, in that I was not part of the contest last year, or ever for that matter. But, I would sure like to be in it this year.[:D]
' "WHEN YOU DIE ALL YOU LEAVE IS REPUTATION" ALL YOU TAKE ARE YOUR MEMORIES" " ME"[;)][8D]
Sorry if this sounds stupid but why does it matter when you post the deer as long as its before the deadline(end of season)?
It doesent matter to me I say a start dare and finishdate as long as all entres are within those dates I think its cool, Good point thunder,,[;)]
should be fun no matter what. sorry to the guys on my team, but i am getting much better with my bow. grew up with a shotgun in my hands but have only been bow hunting for maybe 5 years. first 3 were with an old oneida eagle that i am ashamed to say i never practiced with. the first bow season had me hooked though, less presure, more action and a lot more challenge. 2 years ago my father in law who use to shoot competition and hunt bought me a Diamond Raptor and started teaching me on how to shoot better. it is nice that he works part time at the local Gander Mt. in the archery dept. with a small range. i sure saw the improvement last year with my doe kill. now why the buck shakes are gone i will quit because that is what hunting is all about... the excitement.
I like having to post within 7 days. In Indiana I can only kill one buck with any legal weapon all year. So this would even the playing field for me a little.
I can shoot 2, so I will enter the bigger one. [:D]
Any chance of starting a poll post and see what the majority want to do as far as when a deer would need to be put on here? ie 7 days, 14 days or by end of the season.I can go along with any but my vote would be for 7 days since I can only kill one buck and couldn't upgrade if I killed a bigger one.
So if I put my "tag" on a buck that some poor driver hit but I have to put down with my Glock, can that count???? I know we get several that way each year and I only have to put a computer number down and it's then legal![:D][:D][:o)][:o)][:D][:D]

It was a common practice when I was growing up in MN. You were only allowed one deer per year, only my dad and I hunted, and we had 9 mouths to feed in our family. Soooo, mom and the two older girls all bought tags as well. That way we could kill 5 deer.
That may be common practice in MN, but illegal as can be if they are not in the field, and within sight, of the hunter that took the animal.

I agree. I was just stating what we used to do while I was growing up. My father was a fine man, but that was the one area where he let me down. I was young enough to trust his judgement without question, therefore did not know what we were doing was illegal until I started hunting again a few years after leaving home.
