Starbucks blocking porn on wifi: Good Idea or Bad?

Starbucks is set to block customers from being able to watch pornography on the WiFi provided in its coffee stores next year, following a campaign from anti-Internet porn organization Enough is Enough.
Good or Bad Idea:
YES w/o a doubt the idea to "ban" something from their "free" wifi is a winner and libtards everywhere will rally around. Coffee sales will go up
NO Who cares what someone watches while sipping expensive coffee with their little finger sticking out. If anything sales will go down.

Dont like it, dont drink their overpriced coffee.
Thats how capitalism works.
I doubt many here are big fans of Starbucks.
I don't care for Starbucks but their business is their business.
Why to we have to judge it?

It is also my money and my taste buds, so you won't see me in any Starbucks anyway.
Who the hell would watch porn in public?
It is indeed their wifi and their stores.

Who the hell would watch porn in public?Obviously more people than anyone would would think. If only a few it wouldn't be an issue. Maybe a sign saying "TURN YOUR VOLUME DOWN and USE EARPHONES WHEN WATCHING PORN" would have done the trick.[:p]
It's a financial decision and has no moral components.

^^^^^^What he said.^^^^^^

I believe I was at a place once where GunBroker was banned. I rarely use public wifi, and may have been overseas at the time, but was presented with a message that stated gun related websites were not permitted.
You do not have to wish for something or even like when recognizing and respecting an organization's choices.
GB forums bans a lot of things. Some I agree with and some I do not, but I understand that while I have the choice to participate, I do not have the power to dictate what I can do in the house of another.

And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Porn, like sex acts, should be kept private.
Its their wifi.

Ditto.
For Starbucks? For customers? For stockholders? For porn makers? For even that part of the public who don't go to Starbucks or watch porn? Or for those who'd like to find a place to watch porn for free?

Is it not within their rights if they are providing the wifi?
That said, I am a (hard core) geek... and I say don't block anything.
First, it is impossible to Block It All and still allow any kind of outside access. Second it is trivial to get around, via VPN or similar - depends on how the block is being implemented.
The biggest reason... (and what should be run past someone who really is a lawyer) is liability.
If you fully admit that you do not block anything, you aren't responsible for what is viewed. You still have to eject folks behaving badly, etc. but as for actual content accessed you'll have no liability.
Once you start blocking something, all someone has to do is get offended at *something* (RemoteGirl anyone?) and now you are liable because you did not block it while you are blocking "everything else".
"I came to *$ because they keep the internet clean for little Tommy on his iPad while I drink my latte. He saw a picture of a girl in a thong with her legs spread... and now I'm traumatized!" Calls the media, raises heck, gets an ambulance chaser on a percentage of collected and files a lawsuit.
Sure, it probably won't go far in a lawsuit, etc. but "trial by media" plus the legal fees to have it taken care of as far as it does go through the legal system will cost.
Next, they will block all the gun websites! Not a porn advocate one bit but our freedoms are being cut off inch by inch and there is a pun in there somewhere.
Yep I cannot check GunBroker at work have to use my phone to do it. There is a No Weapons Policy. Just recently they banned fixed blade Knives. Problem is my folding pocket knife is larger than the Knife that brought this on. And mine is an automatic knife hit the button and its open.

Already happening at Disney

The same type of people who habit Starbucks, I understand Starbucks is one of those places that allow people with gender identity issues to use whatever restroom they want.
I don't patronize Starbucks, and I don't look at porn.
They're just announcing it for publicity, trying to stay in the news. Old saying ... any publicity is good publicity.
It matters not to me.
I don't patronize Starbucks, and I don't look at porn.
+1

What many people seem to miss is the private property issue. "Freedom" and "Rights" only exist in public places. When you are on my private property, you do, or don't do, and act as I say. Simple really.

I can remember when it used to be that way, but activists courts have made decision counter to that precept.
Take for instance accommodating samesexuals
What I don't understand is how is blocking it on their in house wi-fi connection going to stop a freak from watching it over their data connection?
Answer,.....it isn't.
The truly sad part is that there are pervs/freaks that would even do such things in the first place, i.e. watch porn in public where others can see it.
Kinda reminds me of the classless people that speak/shout with utter vulgarity out in public. Some folks just need to have their * kicked, and taught a lesson.[xx(]
I don't go to Starbucks, and I don't look at porn. I also understand a business not wanting to have porn visible to customers and children that do not wish to, or shouldn't see such things.

I agree with you, I hate when people swear in public. It actually makes my skin crawl, not say this I'm not above saying a bad word or two. But I also know my audience and adjust the way I talk took it the audience.
But like I said it makes my skin crawl when people swear in public. But I just grit my teeth bare it, because I will not take away a person's constitutional right of freedom of speech... That's not to say that I won't remind them that there are others present that may not like their way of expressing themselves. But that's as far as I would take it
