Not going to mention the specific company, but I am currently dealing with a garage door company to get some doors installed on my shop.
Now, I guess proper perspective is in order here: I spent the last two months dealing with snow, ice, rain-- you name it-- to get the entire pole building erected: setting poles, placing trusses and purlins, and constructing rafters, and eventually siding the thing-- the bulk of the entire project without benefit of walls or roof overhead. I worked on ladders, lifts, and hung from the building itself at times.
Now these pansy choir boys won't even come on site because there is some ice on the shop floor and some standing water in small pools (less than an inch deep). I've done my best to make sure it's all good to go, spreading gravel around, breaking up the ice in the bays where they will work and I pumped out 99% of the standing water (which at this point is only standing over compacted gravel in a few spots). Heck there isn't even any mud!
The whole reason I went with this company was because of the timeline they could promise. I had lower quotes that were a few weeks further out. I suppose it wouldn't bother me so much but they sent a guy yesterday to look at the job site. The guy came unannounced and unscheduled, right through my closed gate and starts poking around in my shop, without even bothering to stop at the house to let me know he was here. He's damn lucky he wasn't shot. This is Idaho, after all. But to top it off, I tried talking to the guy about the job and he was super rude to me.
If I thought I could just cancel the whole job without losing my deposit, I would... like yesterday.

Ice is deadly, I respect it very much. My 64 year old neighbor fell and crushed her hip over the weekend. Ask her if she is afraid of ice. She almost froze to death as it was 19* and took 2 hours for her to drag herself back inside to get to a phone.
May of a lawsuit filed and claimed over ice accidents.
I would be on the phone to the owner of the company. WTH ever happened to our hard working men. We work in every kind of weather, and show up when we promised. I swear our work force is doomed.

Thank you. This is what I am thinking too. There's going to be ice here. It's North Idaho and it's winter. Do they just take days off when it gets cold outside?? When I worked for the forest service, I was expected to work next to fires in the heat. It was hot. You can't very well dress for the hot. You can dress for the cold. And you can use equipment that equips you to work on ice. This is pretty maddening.

no kidding so many people today are Pansey's ( trying to keep it PG ) so sad what our work force has become. in just a small way I see some of th eillegals willing to do what ever and work harder in appreciation for the chance to live here
I know of a group of Mexicans all work harder and show up every day that most all others (citizens ) walked away from because it was just too hard and that was just working on a hog farm that pays them all very well
like most of you I worked out side no matter the weather was it pleasant no was it dangerous well yes it was
but I knew I had a family to support and did what I had to do
Sounds like your pole building contractor was responsible for getting the O.H. doors installed. If so, didn't you old back his final payment until this was completed??!

Not sure what you're implying. I am expecting this door contractor to deliver. So far, all I've given them was a deposit to order the doors. The building is up and waiting for them to do their work.

Mr. P. FYI my neighbor is not a garage door installer. She was carrying in firewood that she had split last summer. Got's to keep warm you know.
Well, I feel very bad for her, but the experience is not at all relevant to this discussion.

The part about them getting shot reminds me of a recent incident.
I bought a new wood furnace and needed a tin knocker to hook up it to the hot air ducts.
The tin knocker was a friend of my neighbor.
When the tin knocker had the transition ready he stopped over the house but we were not home.
The tin knocker called my neighbor to see if he knew where we were because he was at our house looking for us.
My neighbor said to the tin knocker that he was lucky that I was not home. The neighbor said showing up unannounced the tin knocker might have gotten shot if I was home.
The conditions I have worked in over the years go from working under tobacco netting picking tobacco when it was well over 100 degrees under the net to working up in the Arctic Circle in freezing cold conditions on a ship If I made money I did it.
These young guys today do not know the meaning of the word work.
Grew up farming in north carolina . Temps from extreme hot to frigid cold. Worked as a well driller for two winters. Volunter fireman for 38 years. Tell me it too hot / cold to be out working . ( wishes for green font )

Did the company have a contact number for you Like your cell phone number or home phone number I don't know this business about the guy showing up unannounced is a bit of a red flag Maybe not that Is there would be theft involved but it's just poor business practice Whenever I have somebody come over to work at my house they have my phone number they call me and tell me that they are on their way

It sucks, but I would try and keep the big picture in mind. Speak directly with the owner if possible and be a little patient.
Garage door installation is pretty much out in the weather in all kind of conditions. The place isn't closed in yet pending installation of the,,,with me,,,, garage doors. That's right. The garage doors.
A garage door installation company should know this and have tools and equipment to deal with the variety of conditions. The employees should dress and be prepared for the conditions.
A company operating it's business in a region with extreme weather / conditions should know this. At the very least learn it darn quick. Maybe this company and its employees just moved here from L.A.
First off you should tell us the name of the company. I ignore any "anonymous Source" of information. Secondly, the workers were paid to be door installers under normal conditions. I would venture to say that everyone reading this, at one time or another cancelled a job or appointment due to inclement weather or unsafe conditions. Consider this, if one of them had fallen and injured himself, you would probably have been liable for his injuries. Secondly, did you have a contract that the job be completed on a certain date? Thankfully I worked for a company that had confidence in me and accepted my decision to refuse a job until it was reevaluated. Ice on the shop floor and standing water in your own words!!!!! C'mon Man!! Would you work under these conditions or come back another day when it was safe. I could tell you horror stories when I worked for Mayflower and Bekins. But then again, I had understanding supervisors.
I agree it's a garage door or doors if they are pros it would be done in no time .
I had a set put on by a door company once and they were in and done
All the rest i have done on my own with a little help from one of my sons even my wife help out once its a long way from being difficult
Less than 2 hours to install an overhead door. Ten minutes to put sand over ice.

Mr.P, put on your big boy pants and install the buggers yourself. I, like you, built my 30X40 shop over the course of a year in similar weather. I had to tear mine down and move it to another location on my 20 acres. Installed 2 new doors myself. Piece of pie!

Yes sir.
Take a deposit from a bunch of people, don’t order doors, and you can pay bills during slack time.
I think I’d take a trip to the shop and see if my doors had arrived, then proceed from there.

With all the injury lawyers out there and the cost of worker's comp insurance, the company policy is likely not to send people out in those conditions.
Some workers are just looking for an opportunity to slip and fall. Like hitting the work lottery.
I'm more inclined to go with smokie14's thoughts, They promised a certain delivery time which is why you said you chose them at a higher cost, but they can't deliver. So they are trying to CYA, but then again I don't know...
