I was listening to the uber-popular Led Zeppelin song "Hey, Hey, What can I do?", a B-side released opposite "Immigrant Song" back in 1970.
Every time I hear it, I can't help but sing "signs signs everywhere a sign" during the guitar riff. That, of course is a repeated lyric in the song "Signs" done by the barely known band Five Man Electrical Band recorded in 1970 and released in 1971.
It's a bit forced to put that lyric in there rhythmically, but my mind just does it. Anyone else do that?
Listening to the two songs back to back, there's barely any similarity at all.

This AM at the health club they had country music on. First time in my 22 years of going there! I told one of the trainers that I enjoyed the choice and she told me she had many requests which acturally surprised me in as good way (=:

I run into certain riffs once in a while that are similar to riffs in other songs made by different artists. Can't name any off the top of my head though. I actually quit being a regular listener of songs and only do when I'm out driving in my car these days. Gave away all my stereo equipment to one of my sons a few years ago.
When it comes to music, my brain sometimes really surprises me. I can find myself out working in my shop when all of a sudden I'll think of a song and can "hear" it playing in my head with near accuracy as a song playing on a recording!
It is also very easy for me to get songs stuck in my head. Not always a pleasant thing either!
Not with those two songs, but with Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolf of London.

This happens often Mr. Perfect. As a guy that studied piano for many years and played years after and then bought a Martin D-18 and tried to play it with some success, music has always been a big part of my life. Frequently, a few measures will mimic one from a different song. Generally, many popular songs use chord patterns that may be the same depending on the style of music. But as in your example, some songs carry that to a different level. Some result in law suits (I think a Stones song was one legated about 15 years ago) others make a little news and then just fade away.

Very true. It's interesting in this case the timing of the relationship. Potentially written within months, long before either could have become very polularized.
