I"m not sure as only been overseas when in the military but aren't you required to carry your passport when in another country? Most places require a government form of ID; banks, to purchase a firearm, buy ammo in some places, purchase tobacco and liqour (proof of age) and so on.
So what is the big deal about?
The Constitution of the United States clearly says that police can't just stop someone and conduct an investigation unless there are "articulable facts" indicating possible criminal activity. So how can they do exactly that with drunk driving roadblocks? Good question. And it was raised in the case of Michigan v. Sitz, in which the Michigan Supreme Court striking down DUI roadblocks as unconstitutional. In a 6-3 decision, however, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Michigan court, holding that they were constitutionally permissible.
Chief Justice Rehnquist began his majority opinion by admitting that DUI sobriety checkpoints do, in fact, constitute a "seizure" within the language of the Fourth Amendment. In other words, yes, it appears to be a blatant violation of the Constitution. However, he continued, it's only a little one, and something has to be done about the "carnage" on the highways caused by drunk drivers. The "minimal intrusion on individual liberties," Rehnquist wrote, must be "weighed" against the need for -- and effectiveness of -- DUI roadblocks. In other words, the ends justify the means. There is no such thing as a little blatant violation of the Constitution. It is a violation or it is NOT. This is a very good example of the courts crap-ing on our founding documents.
Are you familiar with the 4th Amendment? The act of changing the founding document by making law from the court is unconstitutional in and of itself. American citizens love to be crap-ped on.
The liberal judges and some others have been tramping on the individuals' constitutional rights for decades because we, the people, have allowed them to do so.
So it has been, and so it will [:(!] increase more and more until there are no individual rights. [xx(]
And I wonder why Americans allow corrupt judges and politicians to thrive? We seem to no longer be a country of freedom loving people, but a country of mice and meek serfs. We deserve what we get![:(]
