Who still writes checks..?

..Everything seems to be going cashless. Use your debit card for coffee, pay your bills online, etc. We won't do it. We write paper checks and mail them. The only direct deposit is my Social Security because they won't send paper checks anymore. I don't have an ATM card. My wife is one of 50 at a factory of about 700 that gets a check. Are we alone in our stone age world?

I do write checks for some services, Like filling my propane tank.
I will say that I find myself writing very few checks nowadays and I would bet that banks will start to charge some kind of fee for accounts if you write checks. The banks want you to use a debt card.
I use the debit for most purchases except hotel and on line purchases.
I write checks to pay bills.
I pay my regular bills online. I don't have a debt card. I have an ATM card and a credit card. I use my credit card to purchase most things and I pay my bill, in full every month.

No debit card, but an ATM card and a Credit card....wouldn't an ATM card be a debit card??

yes, one in the same
I use checks when I want a receipt I can file. The heat sensitve slips from debit cards don't last forever.
I scan paper receipts with my printer/scanner and file electronically in folders in my computer and also back up with Carbonite.

Not completely alone, but close to it. On-line banking is so easy and safe that even a dinosaur like me uses it almost exclusively. I write a paper check maybe twice a year at max, and then only to pay someone who is still in the stone age like you.[:)]
If you do not trust either, do what I do. Go to the local grocery store and buy a roll of aluminum foil. Make yourself a tin hat to wear whenever doing business on-line. And, never let your balance exceed 1 million dollars. Less for "them" to steal. [:D]
My son,,who is 22, doesn't know what cash is.[:I][B)]
The occasional parking ticket. Cash withdrawals from the drive-thru bank teller.
And recently I wrote all my co-pays for an AC separation. Doc, cracker, x-ray . . .
Free checks now, but I hardly use them anymore. 15 years ago, 30-35 a month.
Checks or cash only. I won't bank on line or pay anything on line. Mail me a statement and take a check or you won't get paid. Nobody can make you get a computer to pay a bill. No automatic withdrawals either.
..[;)]
Dale, I hear you, I am at 50-50 now and the banks REALLY want to do the online thing. As we pass away from this generation,,it will all be air money.
My son,,who is 22, doesn't know what cash is.[:I][B)]
..It's rare for anyone where my wife works to have any cash
on their person. If I need more cash, I go to the drive-thru and
cash a check.
The only check I write is to the County treasurer twice a year for my doe tag licenses.
NRA Lifetime Benefactor Member.
or credit card (balance paid each month) I will not have an
automatic withdrawal. The wife does almost all online, and
auto pay, and is always griping about it.
Also my check book is kept to the penny, anything else drives
me crazy.[:)]
Thing that tic me off every one has to run a $5.00 -$8.00 on damn credit Card Takes 5 times as long as cash. Most people don't carry any cash [:(!][V] we had a power outage last winter knocked all power for 48 hours after lights came back on the CREDIT card readers in my section of town did not come back on line . I was amazed how many could not buy Food or gas even after they knew they had no credit card working They did not even have $20.00 at home [xx(][:(]
We write checks. We pay bills with checks and mail them.
here too
Nobody can make you get a computer to pay a bill.
Oh yes they can, and one of these days that will be the only option. Companies will stop issuing payroll checks, and if you want paid you will have dirrect deposit. Companies will stop accepting "snail mail" checks for payment for things too. All that handling paper checks costs somebody money. Social Security is switchimg to auto deposit, in fact I think the grace period has passed.
We write about 5 checks a year, and I probably write one of those.

..Sadly true, HPD. Wife's company was going to stop printing checks but put that on hold...for now. And yes, SS won't send a check any longer.
..Perry Shooter, that drives me up the wall at stores when someone has to use a card for a pack of cigs or a cup of coffee. There's usually a glitch and it takes 2 minutes for what should be a 15 second transaction.
..On the rare occasion I use a credit card, my new Cabela's card has a chip in it. Instead of just swiping it, now I have to insert it and it takes forever to go through. When I worked at a full service gas station in high school, the only card "reader" was the one that made carbon imprints of the raised card numbers. When's the last time you saw one of those?...[:D]
I'm just flat not going to pay it, so they will take my check instead.
What do you mean "for my portion of the bills"?
We split the bills up, she pays most of them online so she writes herself a check out of my account for my portion of the bills, and I pay some of the other bills (ie she buys the groceries and pays internet/electric bill and I pay her car payment). It is what works easiest for us.

..I'm glad that works for you but I really don't get it. After 38 years, there's never been any "my money and her money". Whatever works for you. I know a few others that do it that way. My folks did.
. . .Local tax man don't take no plastic.
I don't know where you live, but all of my taxes (local, State, Federal) are paid directly from my on-line account. I can also pay them (except Federal)with plastic if I prefer.
The only place I know of where cash is king is in a Casino. Even there, you can find any number of ATM machines that will convert plastic to cash which is then converted to chips at most all table games. Only the machines continue to take cash but that is slowly being replaced with paper tickets.

But, if the seller charges to use a card, the old check goes into the mail. What's the big hurry? I have done without their product for far over half a century so a little more time isn't going to hurt.
Some sellers will take ONLY plastic and charge a fee.....I shop elsewhere.
I really like the GunBroker checkout system -IF- the other party doesn't tack on a fee for credit card use. It saves so much time and the product will be here in the time it takes for a check to reach them, plus many hold a check for a while.

+1 It is awesome!!! I won a m1 carbine a couple Fridays ago, paid thru GB and it arrived at my FFL on that next Monday morning. You can't get much faster than that!
