v35 beat me to it!WHY?.22 Cheap Plinking, Practice, Small Game ... Everybody should own at least 1 10/22.223 Nato Round, Cheap, Abundant Supply, more power than .22... better Range, Accuracy & almost as common as the .22.308 Again, Nato round, Cheap, Abundant Supply, more power than .223 ... better Range, Accuracy than .223 & again almost as common as the .22 A rifle is only a club if you dont have ammo!

are you picking a .45 as a rifle caliber, or because it fits your beloved 1911 that you don't want to be without? As a pistol round, it would be one of my choices, but to bring a Thompson to a rifle shoot, well, I just don't think so. Nothing wrong with the thompson, would rather own one than a 10/22, but well, bring what you got.

so.... where does the 300 win. mag. fit in?

Mustang; I would say the 300 win. mag would replace the 30-06 in any state north of Missouri.

mustangIf he'd asked for 4 the 300 win mag may have been my next pick, but most likely the 30.06, the 300 still isn't all that common but it is finding its nitch ... as distance increases, immediate need decreases... IMHO

Will you guys stop it? I have my boss convinced that I need a rifle in every caliber used for horned and antlered game! I still need the 6.5x55 and maybe a couple of others, but since I just bought the second .243, I can sell that to buy something else!.22lr.30-06 (I don't have one or even like 'em).375 H&H

This is Mrs. Sandman2234. Sandman thinks he married "just another pretty face", but I am smarter than he thinks. Granted, I don't know alot about guns, but when they are the same size, same color, same weight, and have the same writing on the barrels, they are probably the same type of gun. I don't have a problem with three different guns, as long as they know how to shoot snakes on the ground and intruders if needed.I personally only really like his .410 Thompson Contender. It works as a rifle for me. I could play with it all day. I can pretty much shoot that one without fear. I could probably use it on an intruder as well if needed. Hey, maybe 3 Thompson Contenders of these would be nice. He could load one for me while I was shooting the other. So I guess the "3 gun theory" may work at times.

.22lr., 30-06, and 9mm Luger. Not really a rifle round, but everyone needs a gun chambered in it.

I agree with the 22lr, and the small, high power, I give it a range however, depending on preference and geography, .223/.22-250/.243 which ever you need/want, and finally, I like the magnums. 7mm, .300wm, or if you want the failsafe, 7mm or 300 ultra mag. Hunt the world with that one. read a couple of articles on those baby's, performed very well in Africa.

any dog raised to be vicious will be that. If you raise your wiener dog to be a killer it will be......if you raise your rottweiler to be a teddy bear it will be.... yes all dogs tend to have a sort of personality within each breed.....but unless you exploite it, it will be a very loving pet. I know several Rottwielers, pitbulls, and pinchers that are very calm, and have no temper at all.

Kadaver and I are on the same page here: .22LR, .223/7.62x39, & 30-06. Those will take care of anything on the N.American continent and most everything anywhere else. Those are the calibers that I will always have on hand.

Hey just a question nothing more, how is it that no one has mentioned the 270. Held the 1000 yd. accuracy record until the late 90s, taken away then by a caliber that was considered to be an air to air effective, with few reservations the 50 cal. browning. Now Im not kicking the browning and all the good it did in the 2nd world war,but I have never accepted It as a shoulder weapon.

22 Long Rifle....this would be the first gun I'd select if going to the range for a day of shooting. Great for plinking, small game hunting, teaching kids to shoot....it's my all time favorite caliber.Mid range caliber would have to be either a 22-250 or 223. Two of the most popular calibers for varmits, small game, prairie dogs, and personal defense....(should the Governor call up the citizens to grab their guns and go fight the Taliban)Big game animals with lots of mass require big guns to drop critters with one shot. General rule of thumb is that most North American big game needs to be taken with .30 or larger. My choice would be 7mm Rem mag, flat shooter, lots of power.....but a 375 H&H would rank right in there as top pick also.Sandman, sorry you got caught, but your better half seems pretty understanding....Take her out and buy her a new gun for being such a good sport!

SIMPLE22lf, cheap and will put food on the table in hard times. 10-22 or even better reliable BOLT action..223 Nato, cheap and MORE avail. than 7.62x39 when the apocalypse comes. 223 will kill deer or people in situations . Ar-15 or eqiuvelent Bolt rifle..308 BEFORE 30-06, NATO, will always be able to obtain. More accurate than 30-06 and 308 will kill anything the 30-06 can kill, If you don't believe me go to Africa and look see what the use to kill lions and elephants!Plus if all you can get is 06 ammo the dump powder cut and size to 308 recharge and reseat. All those 06 rifles would eventually become firewood and tent stakes.Optional replace .223 with dangerous game cart. 45-70 or something like 458mag.or 375HH

Why hasn't anybody mentioned/picked the .50BMG yet? Just in case they want to hunt a Mack truck (that falls under the big game category doesn't it?) .-Smooth
