The Saddest Country/Western Song Ever

I was on a security detail, standing next to the stage, while the Tejas Brothers were playing. The lady standing next to me had something to do with the promotion of the show. The Tejas Brothers performed "He Stopped Loving Her Today," in such a way as to make George Jones smile. It was a real tearjerker.
I remarked to the lady that I thought that "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is the saddest Country & Western song ever written. She disagreed. She thought that "The Grand Tour," another George Jones song, is the saddest.
I could not remember "The Grand Tour," so I had to look it up later. It's sad all right, but not nearly as sad as "He Stopped Loving Her Today."
What say you? What is the saddest Country & Western song ever written?

I'm so Lonesome I could Cry
If you have ever really lost someone, it will make you cry.

The tears have all been shed now
We've said our last goodbyes
His souls been blessed
He's laid to rest
And it's now I feel alone
He was more than just a father
A teacher my best friend
He can still be heard
In the tunes we shared
When we play them on our own
Chorus:
I never will forget him
For he made me "what I am"
Though he may be gone
Memories linger on
And I miss him, the old man
As a boy he'd take me walking
By mountain field and stream
And he showed me things
not known to kings
And secret between him and me
Like the colours of the pheasant
As he rises in the dawn
And how to fish and make a wish
Beside the Holly Tree
Chorus
I thought he'd live forever
He seemed so big and strong
But the minutes fly
And the years roll by
For a father and a son
And suddenly when it happened
There was so much left unsaid
No second chance
To tell him thanks
For everything he's done
Chorus

I nearly wore that one out listening in '79.

yep
You're reading this, my mama's sittin there
Look's like I only got a one way ticket over here
I sure wish I could give you one more kiss
War was just a game we played when we were kids
Well I'm layin down my gun and hanging up my boots
I'm up here with God and we're both watching over you
So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul
Is where my mama always prayed that it would go
And if you're reading this
I'm already home
If you're reading this halfway around the world
I won't be there to see the birth of our little girl
I hope she looks like you
I hope she fights like me
And stands up for the innocent and the weak
I'm layin down my gun and hanging up my boots
Tell dad I don't regret that I followed in his shoes
So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul
Is where my mama always prayed that it would go
And if you're reading this
I'm already home
If you're reading this, there's gonna come a day
When you'll move on and find someone else, and that's ok
Just remember this
I'm in a better place
Where soldiers live in peace and angels sing Amazing Grace
So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul
Is where my mama always prayed that it would go
And if you're reading this
If you're reading this...
I'm already home

Any number of Hank Sr's would make the list. "I'm so Lonesome I could Cry", "I can't help it if I'm still in love with you", "Cold, cold Heart","Men with broken hearts"
I expect he was the king of sad country songs.
I liked him a lot.

Weather man said it's gonna snow
By now I should be used to the cold
Mid-February shouldn't be so scary
It was only December
I still remember the presents, the tree, you and me
But you went away
How dare you?
I miss you
They say I'll be OK
But I'm not going to ever get over you
Living alone here in this place
I think of you, and I'm not afraid
Your favorite records make me feel better
Cause you sing along
With every song
I know you didn't mean to give them to me
But you went away
How dare you?
I miss you
They say I'll be OK
But I'm not going to ever get over you
It really sinks in, you know, when I see it in stone
Cause you went away,
How dare you?
I miss you
They say I'll be OK
But I'm not going to ever get over you

Man, I never could stand that song. Don't mean to offend, but to me, more stupid than sad. The country music equivelant of the Jerry Springer show. "Songs written to make you cry, but instead, make you gag"
Bobby Goldsboro
"Honey"
This was me and my first wifes song.....she passed in 1974.....

(hard to believe that no-one called me on that one!)
For all you George Jones fans he's 81 and next year will be his last tour. He has played at a place about 50 miles from me the last few years. I seen him about 6 years ago there. If he comes next year you can bet I'll be there. God bless George Jones.
