"The Grand Tour" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today" are at the top of sad songs.
Not sure this is country, but I always thouth this was a real sad song.
"It Makes No Difference" by The Band
It makes no difference where I turn
I can't get over you and the flame still burns
It makes no difference, night or day
The shadow never seems to fade away
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door
Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before
It makes no difference how far I go
Like a scar, the hurt will always show
And it makes no difference who I meet
They're just a face in the crowd on a dead-end street
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door
These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
Just like the gambler says:
"Read 'em and weep"
And the dawn don't rescue me no more
Without your love, I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall, it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle, they rattle the walls
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door
Well, I love you so much
That it's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before
Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Steven Curtis Chapman's album 'Beauty will rise', is probably the saddest album I have ever listened to. He wrote all those songs after his daughter was killed when his son backed over her in the driveway. It's not really country (though his roots are country) but I swear, a person can only stand to listen to the entire thing once because it's just too depressing.
Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

Couple other wouldn't play,, maybe lots of "hits",,, did get this message:

Edit to add: Thanks,,, this thread has kept me entertained for a least an hour !!!
Not positive about title but was "Wreck On The Highway" or "When Whiskey And Blood Run Together". Long time ago.Hank Williams maybe? Anyone out there remember this one? Just remembered Roy Acuff I think.Sad for me as my 17 year old uncle was killed on his way home from state fair asleep in back seat of '38 Ford.

This thread was started SO long ago that it is not unlikely that many of the videos have been removed.
We saw George Jones in Greenville, Texas, just a few weeks before he passed on. He closed the show with "He Stopped Loving Her Today." It was a great show.
I didn't read every one of the previous post, and being a dyed in the wool classic country fan, I'm sure I must have posted. Those of you that know me, know how shy and retiring I am.
Been many fine songs mentioned, but, one of the saddest I've heard is Raggedy Ann, by Little Jimmy Dickens.

and let's not forget Doug Stone's (I'd be better off in a pine box
on a slow train back to Georgia, or in the grey walls of a prison
doing time.) Now that's a tear jerker.[:(]
nunn was right the first time. "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones is the saddest Country & Western song ever recorded. Even sadder than "I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON"
"WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON
AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN
BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK
SHE GOT RUNNED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN"

Yes, this is probably the saddest C&W song ever written. For me I have to say it is a toss up between that song and this one.
"The Stanley Brothers, Rank Stranger"
Pretty good'n there but,It's a shame the ol'boy on the "gut bucket" bass is faking it terribly.
Almost as sad as the song.[V]
Gill began writing the song in 1989 after Keith Whitley died. Hence the lyric " you were no stranger to the rain". He wasn't able to finish it until 1993 when his brother Bob died.

Jonny Cash. Version of Hurt.
I think some punk rock band did it originally, but it fits for the older Johnny Cash. Chilling.
A little band called Nine Inch Nails. Not exactly punk, but ok. And yes, I really liked Johny Cash's version also.
Not sure this is country, but I always thouth this was a real sad song.

The band is Nine Inch Nails...not so much sad as haunting. The combination of those lyrics and his voice meld as if they were meant to be.

That almost sounds happy compared to the Pearl Jam version:

But I hate sad songs of any kind. The world is too full of sad realities, than to sing about them.

popgun, if it looked like I was referring to your post I apologize for that. It was purely coincidental. [:)]
This was one of my dads favorite songs. They played it at his funeral.
