About time. Now you are free to buy any long gun any time and the pistol permits should flow easier now as well. Congratulations and good luck!

Hello to everyone here on the forum.

I'm a NJ resident, currently waiting for my FID. It's been 6 weeks and my references haven't even been contacted yet. It probably doesn't help that I'm in the largest city in NJ (Newark) either. In a city where the crime rate is as high as it is, the process should be expedited if anything. It is frustrating to know that while it will probably take me 3 months or longer to be able to purchase a gun, criminals can get their hands on one in less than 3 minutes.

Welcome to the forum. Any place in north Jersey is going to take a long time. It is the bastion on neo marxism and liberal paternalism.
We live in the south, still under the control of the fools in Trenton but in farm area where the local police are somewhat sympathetic. Trust me, we will leave this state as soon as possible.

In the meantime, be the squeaky wheel. Call, push, do not let your application rest. In a big city your are as much a victim of a faceless bureaucracy as your are of any foolich gun laws.

    Again, welcome

In Virginia I can walk into a sporting goods store carry a concealed handgun(with permit) pay for two or more new handguns and walk out of the store with them that day as soon as I fill out the paperwork and pay. I feel your pain in having to wait for no particular reason at all.

Thanks for the support. I will go to the police station next week to see if they have an update. I'll let you know how it goes.

Meanwhile, I am registered for some upcoming firearm (pistol and shotgun) training classes. Hopefully this will help pass time along.

This morning I called for an update on my permint and the officer told me that he just mailed my package out today, stating what I should bring (soc. sec card, birth certificate, 2 utility bills) to our face to face interview. The background and reference check has been completed. He said that I didn't need to get the package he mailed out first, and that he could schedule our meeting for tomorrow morning. I'm not sure if there is another step after this, but hopefully I'm all set.

Today I had a face to face interview and handed in the requested documentation. The detective showed me my FID card and my handgun permits. He said the Chief has to sign off on them and I should be able to pick them up on Friday. [:)]

Yep, 7 weeks total from start to finish. I'm very surprised that it didn't take at least 5 more weeks.

Found this ancient thread(recently updated though) trying to determine how long it's going to take to get my FID. I'm on week 8 :(

I'm originally from Ohio. What a hassle NJ has been.

Hi all. My first post here. I too live in NJ. Was born here, lived in several other states and landed back here. I had the great fortune to live in AZ where I presented my DL and walked out witha fine .357 strapped to my hip. There wasn't a greater feeling of freedom in the world. Then the darkness came. The local PD sai registration of my gun from AZ was voluntary (I chose NOT to) but gone were the days of strapping on and heading out to do some plinking as Ihad done most weekends in some remote dessert area. What joy, busting up dirt clumps, shoting cans (always clean up), etc. I heard horror stories of filling out forms, high fees, long waits, etc. I followedall the rules and lo and behold in just under a month I had my FID and 3 permits to purchase handguns. I used up the and got an AR. Came time to get another pistol permitand was told that since more than 3 months had passed since my last ones were issued I needed the SBI check again. I guess if you can afford to buy a handgun every 89 days you can skip this process and just get the Chief ofPolice signature. Then when I got the permitthe deal for the used gun I wanted fell through, I ended up extending the permit for another 90 days (can only do this once) for $5.00 fee and finallygot a nice little Ruger Single Six. Up until about six years, I guess I was a lemming like so many others. Just content with the way things were. Til' one day I started reminiscing about AZ and digesting my share of gun magazines I quickly became angry that this state imposes some restrictions on it's law-abiding citizens when just a few miles away, Camden, Newark, Irvington, E. Orange, an so forth, compete each year to see which one will get the esteemed title of murder capital of America (or a close 2nd, 3rd, etc.). While, if some scum busts down my door I'm obliged to scurry as far away as possible and call 911 and hope I don't have to pull the trigger. If I am ever in the un-envialble situation where I use force, deadly or not, I WILL be arrested and wil have to defend nyself like a criminal and then get sued civilly by the scum or it;s family.

Sorry. I clicked the post button in my typing frenzy. Well here I am today a Life member with the NRA, and member of SAF, CRKBA, Handgun Owners of America and 2 local shooting clubs. I applaud the efforts of these organizations for what they have achieved with Heller, Castle Doctine, etc., but Ithink it time we Jersyans ask where is my share? Why are there no suits for concealed carry, castle doc, etc. Instead we have new laws on the books and more coming that restrict us to 1gun a month, ban of .50 cal, no sale of ammo unless have FID and sign a book, implement smart gun tech as soon as it's commercially available. One poster mentioned that he lives in So. jersey and things are more relaxed than "up North". Come on up to Sussex county and I'll show you thousands (yes THOUSANDS) in our clubs who are sympathetic and active. Even most of the local police and Sherriff's dept. are on our side. They are fellow shooters and are losing ranges to shoot at and qualify at. Active is the key word. I know what I do to help and I implore you all to get together at you club and get involved. If all they do is sit aroub and talk guns and reloading and the like, start a political action group and talk to other groups and see what they do. Another point I'd like to make is: I read a previous post that said something to the effect of not wanting us Jersyans in PA and liberalizing things. Half joking or not, I believe there is some bit of truth in that. Several years ago my brother-in-law moved to N. Carolina. Over 15 years he has seen the gun laws change drastically i.e. permit needed for hangun purchase, some towns refusing to issue Concealed permits, and the grand daddy of them all; (not sure if it's law yet or pending)If a citizen feels threatened by another citizen (for ANY reason), and files a police report, the local cops are gonna come and take your guns until, well who knows. The fact that the law was just recently introduced and is being considered is lunacy. Anyone with a grudge can claim they feel threatened by another. Some folks in N. Carolina say these things happened because of the huge influx of US. Another reason for the rest of the country to hate us (and California...lol).
I would like to thank the moderators for suppluing this forum allowing me to vent. And thanks to anyonewho reads it and comments. (Whew maybe I will just move, it's easier. But when asked where I'm from I'll probably say, Delaware..lol)

This is one of longest (time wise) thread i've ever seen.

Anyway applied in December '08 for my FID in a "wonderful :-( " town in Ocean County. Besides being * at by the guy doing the finger prints because he had to do his job and finger print me and he had done soooo many that day, I was told that FID's in this town take 5 to 7 months......... yep 5 to 7 months.

What happened to the state mandated 30 days.... I was told by a reputable gun dealer recently that the courts have so far ruled in favor of the Chief of Police and deem that if he needs more time he gets as long as he wants.

Thats just a shame. They have us under their thumbs. If they break the law, then it's up to us to bring the issue to the proper authority. Most of us don't have the time or the money to fight as individuals. Talk to localclub members. Send an email to NRA-ILA. It can't hurt. Write your congressman. Keep us up to daye here. Tony C

You will get it. I have had mine for several years now. Once you have it buy as much and as quickly as you can. Though things are pretty easy now, the No. Jersey Liberals are constantly working to further infringe upon your rights.

Yeah, I'm already looking @ .45's from Kimber, Glock & Sig with the 22 conversion kit to plink around with, some variant of the 7.26 AK like the wasr 10 and either a Marlin or Mossberg .22lr for the kid.

Called the other day, just to see how the process was going. Was met with a very impatient firearms person that just kept trying to get off the phone. I was told they are months behind and I would get a call.

I spoke to a gun attorney later that afternoon, basically I was told NJ courts will not force the municipalities to follow the law on FID issuance. They do have a flat rate letter service, where they send a letter to the PD reminding them of the law, they told me not to even do that until at least 3 months have passed.

I'm at 3.5 months. After getting some advice on the FID forum at Newjerseryhunter.com forum, I started calling the PD repeatedly. It looks like I should be complete in the next week or so.

Don't know if anyone is tuning into this channel anymore but just in case anyone was interested I thought I'd give some info!

I live in Jackson Township ... and in case you aren't familiar with it ... it's where Six Flags Great Adventure is. ;-)

Anyway, applied for my FID card & Handgun permit and I just received a call today telling me I could come pick them up from the Police Department.

From getting my fingerprints taken to the time I had the card in my hand was 67 days. That's 67 days including weekends and two holidays ... Easter & Memorial Day.

All and all I don't think it was that bad. Now that everything is in order it's just a matter of pulling together the last few dollars for the gun!

TAKE CARE EVERYONE & BE SAFE!!!

I just received my NJ pistol permit. I applied for it February 16 2009 and I just got the permit last Friday May 29th. I feel much safer knowing that the police do such extensive background checks, NOT!

You got to love it. I really got spoiled when I lived in Florida, what a great state.

Its funny, I recently got my Fl and VA concealed carry permits. I can carry in 35 states, but not in my home state, how sick.

Depends on where you live in NJ. I live in Gloucester county, 2 weeks on pistol permits. We are leaving the state after the wife's parents pass on, the newest iteration on governor candidates will be more of the same and a further erosion of already diminished gun rights.
