Speeding Ticket :(

Well, my two and a half years of good luck finally ran out this morning.
I was driving home from a doctors appointment and was napped by a State Trooper on the highway. He was very courteous and I made a point of being respectful in return.
I'm not looking for a way out and plan on paying the state for my violation.
The officer was kind enough to lower the speeding violation down to set me in a lower bracket in terms of fine $$$ and points on the license. I figured that is more than I could have asked for and am not going to push my luck with trying to get out of it.
Does anyone have any idea what's going to happen to my insurance now? This is my first ticket.

Believe me here Robo: If you can get it erased from your record, you must!!!

In TX, you can contact the court and request to take defensive driving. You can take defensive driving only once in a twelve month period. Upon completion of defensive driving, the charge is off your record (not affecting your insurance) and you pay a reduced fine.
YEP. Ask the judge for DD School or whatever simular programs they might have. An insurance agent might be able to answer that question for you.

robo: I have a good bit of experience with speeding tickets. I have never gone 12 months without getting at least pulled over. In fact, I probably haven't gone 3 months without getting pulled over. It's the only enforceable law I violate, and unfortunately it's the easiest violation of the law to get caught for.
You did well to be respectful. I've gotten out of more tickets by being smooth, calm, and polite to the officer than anyone has by any method that doesn't involve blonde hair and flirting.
What will happen with your insurance and what you can do to mitigate your expenses will depend greatly on a few factors:
1. Which state cited you for speeding
2. Which state your license is from
3. How fast you were going, what the limit was, and what the ticket was written for
Assuming that it was in the same state as your license is from, and that your state awards points for traffic violations, and that your insurance can get a record of the points on your license, then there are other factors. For example, in North Dakota there is no automatic reporting to your insurance unless you get 3 points. And you lose one point per three months, so if you get less than 3 points then you have to hope that you run out of points before your insurance company next randomly checks your record.
Also in North Dakota, defensive driving school can wipe out 3 points. But it wipes them out after they go on your record. In some states, you can wipe them out before they go on your record.
Some states have no points at all, and just record the number of tickets. Presumably, traffic school would wipe out one or more tickets from your record. But whether it does so before or after they go on the record, and whether your record is automatically reported to insurance when you get a ticket or not, matter greatly.
The third factor above mainly matters if you want out of the ticket. If you have a reasonable explanation and your offense was not egregious, you could contact the prosecuting attorney (State's Attorney or Commonwealth Attorney depending on your state) the county where you were cited and beg forgiveness. If he doesn't prosecute the ticket, you won't be found guilty and it won't go agianst your license.

1. Maine cited me for the violation.
2. I have a Maine drivers license.
3. I was in actuality doing 81 in a 65, but he wrote it as a 79 in a 65.

Even though it was in a populated area, go ahead and make the call. You won't make things any worse for trying, and you aren't really getting out of anything. You're letting the state dig it's paws into your pocket a little deeper today, so your insurance company doesn't do it for the next five years.
Don't worry about it robo, get driving school, some places let you take it online and those are REALLY easy to do.

You got a ticket for THAT???
I was doing 85 with a trooper behind me, and when I moved over cause I thought he was gonna nab me, he took off at no less than 90. All in a 65 zone.

I think he cut you a break and it is your first ticket. Live with it.
BTW - Zerodin is going for a record of at least one speeding ticket in every state in the union and a few Canadian Provinces.[:D][:D][:D]
Remember it is not a crime at this level. So you can still bear arms.

As somebody else said, TRY your hardest to get the ticket removed. Even if it costs you $3-400....no kidding.
Or...as somebody else suggested, try for a DD school....or beg the prosecutor...or roll the dice in traffic court.

If you are guilty, TAKE DEFENSIVE DRIVING. It is not exactly "getting out of it." It is a device, allowed by law, so you might as well take advantage. It will cost you about the same money as paying the ticket, but the violation will not show up on your driving record, and you save 10% on your insurance to boot.
My son, Travis, got a speeding ticket. He took Defensive Driving, with my blessing. His money, my blessing. It was enough of a hoop to jump through to get his attention, but he doesn't have a violation on his record now.

As a long haul trucker, I see this every day. Cars zipping in and out of traffic causing others to hit their brakes or make sudden evasive manuevers.
Someone mentioned that 15 over is 'reckless' or 'careless' driving. They're correct! If you get nailed with that charge, you might as well be drunk. The insurance jumps just as much.
Cars (and trucks) have cruise control for a reason, use it!
I've got almsot 1 million miles under my belt with NO Moving Violations!
Here's my way of avoiding tickets.
1. Set the Cruise Control.
2. Tune in the XM and relax.
3. See ya when I get there.
BTW, most jurisdictions will let ya slide up to 9 mph over. [;)]
I would request a jury trial.
IF it ever gets set for jury trial then plead guilty and either pay your fine or take any probationary measures your state or jurisdiction might offer.
I have done this with many tickets and have never had a single one tried. They all just mysteriously fade away. The state wants your money. You are a profit center. It is not profitable to put on a jury trial on a traffic ticket.

Being calm & courteous is a very good thing. It makes it more likely the officer will not make a special point of showing up.
I've gone to court twice & so far the score is 2 to 0 for me.

Will do. Thanks Daddy! [^] Are you and Mom going to make the trip up to represent me?

Also Radar detectors help, but they are useless against laser and in the city as already stated.

I'm in denial Daddy, without you here to hold me I can't get over it. [V][:(]

In Kalifornia you can fight the ticket by mail & if the officer fails to respond you win. If you lose you can then appeal & go to court. Again if the officer fails to show up you win. If you lose you can still request to go to traffic school & have the ticket erased. The judge doesn't have to let you but he may. In each case you can also ask to have the fine reduced. Doesn't hurt to try.

I don't think you can fight most speeding tickets by mail, I couldn't fight mine by mail, it's only smaller tickets I think, not sure though, they once told me I could do that, then changed their mind and made me go in, it was a big hassle.
